How to get your brand cited in ChatGPT and AI search

A practical guide to earning citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews: crawler access, Bing indexing, answer-first pages and brand signals.

Getting cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews comes down to three things: the tools must be able to reach your pages, your pages must answer questions clearly enough to quote, and the wider web must describe your brand consistently. Nobody can guarantee a citation, because each tool chooses its sources per question and those choices shift over time. You can, however, remove the most common reasons you are left out.

This guide covers the practical steps we use for clients, in roughly the order we work on them.

Why nobody can promise citations

AI search tools do not have a fixed list of approved sources. For each question they retrieve candidate pages, judge which ones are relevant and trustworthy, and build an answer. Two people asking the same question a week apart can see different sources. The underlying models and indexes also change without notice.

That means any service promising “guaranteed ChatGPT placement” is promising something it does not control. A more honest goal is to make your business the easiest credible source to use for the questions your customers actually ask, then measure whether that is working. If you are new to the idea, our guide to what AEO is explains how answer engines differ from classic search.

Let the right crawlers in

If a tool cannot fetch your pages, it cannot cite them. This is the most common and most fixable problem we find, usually caused by a robots.txt rule or a firewall setting that someone added without realizing what it would block.

The crawlers that matter for AI search are not the same as the ones used for model training:

  • OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Blocking it makes it much harder to appear as a linked source there.
  • GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler for content that may be used to train its models. It is a training crawler, not a search crawler. You can block it and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
  • ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user’s action in ChatGPT triggers a visit, such as asking about a specific URL.
  • PerplexityBot is the crawler Perplexity uses to index sites for its search results.
  • Googlebot powers Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no separate crawler for AI Overviews. Google-Extended is a separate control for some of Google’s AI model uses, and Google has said it does not affect inclusion in Search.

OpenAI documents its crawlers and their user agents in its bot overview. Check your robots.txt against each one and decide on purpose. Our AI crawler robots generator builds rules for each crawler so you are not guessing.

Also check beyond robots.txt. Some security plugins, CDNs and hosting firewalls block unfamiliar bots by default. If your server logs never show OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot requests, look at those layers too.

Get properly indexed in Bing

Many businesses have spent years on Google Search Console and never opened Bing Webmaster Tools. That is a gap worth closing. OpenAI has said ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawling, and Bing is widely understood to be one of them. Microsoft Copilot is also built on Bing.

The basic steps:

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. You can import a verified property from Google Search Console to save time.
  2. Submit your XML sitemap.
  3. Review the indexing reports for pages that are excluded, blocked or flagged with errors.
  4. Consider IndexNow, which lets your site notify Bing and other participating engines when pages change. Many CMS platforms and SEO plugins support it.

Treat Bing as a real index, not an afterthought. If your key service pages are missing there, you are likely missing from more than just Bing.

Write pages that answer first

Once a tool can reach your page, it needs to find a usable passage quickly. AI answers are often built from a paragraph or two, not a whole article. Pages that bury the answer under a long introduction are harder to use.

What answer-first structure looks like in practice:

  • Open with the answer. The first two or three sentences of a page or section should directly answer the question in plain language.
  • Use headings that match real questions. “How much do veneers cost in Austin” is easier to match than “Our pricing philosophy.”
  • Make each passage stand on its own. Name the subject instead of relying on “it” or “this” from three paragraphs earlier.
  • Be specific. Include the details people actually need: who the service is for, what it involves, typical timelines, what affects the price, and where you operate.
  • Keep it current. Out-of-date prices, hours or staff names give a tool a reason to prefer someone else.

This is not writing for robots. A page that answers clearly near the top also serves the person who arrived from a regular search result and wants to know if they are in the right place.

Make your brand facts consistent everywhere

When someone asks an AI tool to recommend a dentist in their area or compare two agencies, the tool describes businesses using everything it can find: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, review sites, news mentions and forum discussions. If those sources disagree, the tool has less confidence in any of them.

Check that these facts match across the web:

  • Business name, written the same way each time
  • Address and phone number
  • Services offered and the main locations you serve
  • Hours, including holiday changes
  • Key people, such as founders or lead practitioners, and their credentials
  • What makes you different, stated in consistent language

Your Google Business Profile is one of the most visible sources for local businesses. Our Google Business Profile checklist covers the fields that most often go stale. An About page that states your core facts plainly also gives AI tools a reliable place to confirm who you are.

Add structured data that confirms the basics

Structured data does not force a citation, but it helps machines understand what a page is about and who is behind it. Schema markup in JSON-LD format can state your organization’s name, logo, contact details, location, services and social profiles in a form that is easy to parse.

The most useful types for most businesses are Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage and contact page, Article on blog posts, and FAQPage where you genuinely answer common questions. Product and Service markup can help where they apply. Keep the markup accurate and matching what is visible on the page. Our guide to schema markup for small businesses walks through which types to start with.

Earn reviews and third-party mentions

What other people say about you carries weight that your own website cannot. AI tools that recommend businesses often lean on reviews, directory listings, local news coverage, industry publications and community discussions.

Practical ways to build this:

  • Ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms that matter in your industry, and respond to reviews thoughtfully.
  • Make sure you are listed accurately in the main directories and any respected industry-specific ones.
  • Contribute genuine expertise where your audience already looks, such as local publications, trade associations or podcasts.
  • Pursue partnerships that naturally lead to a mention, like sponsoring a community event or co-hosting a workshop.

Avoid shortcuts. Fake reviews and paid link schemes violate platform policies and can damage the reputation you are trying to build. Steady, real mentions are slower but they hold up.

Measure with a fixed prompt set

There is no complete dashboard for AI citations yet, so you need your own tracking. The method that works best for us is simple and repeatable:

  1. Write 20 to 40 prompts that reflect how real customers ask about your services. Mix broad questions (“best family dentist in Plano”) with specific ones (“dentist in Plano that does same-day crowns and takes Delta Dental”).
  2. Run the same prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google on a regular schedule, such as monthly.
  3. Record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your site is linked as a source, and which competitors appear instead.
  4. Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, and track leads from those visits where you can.

Keep the prompt set fixed so the results are comparable over time. Answers vary from run to run, so look for trends across several months rather than reacting to a single result.

Where to start

Start with access. Check your robots.txt and firewall for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot, and verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Then pick the five questions your customers ask most and make sure each one has a clear, direct answer near the top of a relevant page. Build your prompt set before you change anything else, so you have a baseline to measure against.

If you would rather have this handled end to end, our AI search optimization service covers crawler access, content structure, brand consistency and ongoing measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone guarantee my business will be cited in ChatGPT?

No. AI search tools decide which sources to use for each question, and those choices change as models, indexes and competing content change. Anyone promising guaranteed citations is overselling. What you can do is remove the reasons you would be excluded and give the tools clear, trustworthy material to work with, then measure whether your visibility improves over time.

Should I block GPTBot if I want to appear in ChatGPT?

Blocking GPTBot and appearing in ChatGPT search are separate decisions. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI models. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used for ChatGPT search results. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot if you want search visibility without contributing content to model training. Check your robots.txt so each rule is deliberate.

Do I need to be indexed in Bing to show up in ChatGPT?

It is strongly recommended. OpenAI has said ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers as well as its own crawler, and Bing is widely understood to be one of those sources. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submitting a sitemap and fixing indexing issues there is a low-cost step that many businesses have never taken.

How long does it take to start getting cited in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline. Technical fixes like unblocking a crawler can matter as soon as your pages are recrawled. Content and reputation work, such as rewriting pages to answer questions directly or earning reviews and mentions, usually takes months to show up consistently. That is why tracking a fixed set of prompts over time is more useful than checking once.
