SERP snippet preview
On-PageSee how your title, URL and meta description may look in Google on desktop and mobile before you publish the page. Free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser.
How to use it
- Enter your title tag, page URL and meta description.
- Add an optional keyword to see which words Google may bold.
- Switch between Desktop and Mobile and check the pixel meters.
What a search snippet is
A search snippet is the small block Google shows for each result: the site name and URL path, a blue clickable title, and a line or two of description. It is the first impression most people get of your page, often before they have heard of your business. Two pages can rank side by side, and the one with the clearer snippet usually earns the visit.
This preview builds that block from three inputs you control: the title tag, the URL and the meta description. It then trims each line the way a results page does when text runs past the available width, so you can see where the cut falls before the page goes live.
Why the preview measures pixels, not characters
Google limits snippet lines by display width, not by a character count. A title full of wide letters like W and M runs out of room sooner than one with narrow letters like i and l. Desktop titles commonly cut off somewhere around 600 pixels, and descriptions usually show roughly 155 to 160 characters before trailing off.
The tool estimates width with the same font family and size Google uses, then shows a meter for the title and description. A red bar means the text will likely be shortened. An amber bar means you have plenty of unused space. The mobile view uses a narrower layout, so check both.
Writing snippets that earn the click
- Lead with the thing the searcher asked for. If the query is "emergency dentist Austin," the title should say that early.
- Give a concrete reason to choose you: same-day visits, free estimates, a service area, hours.
- Use the description to answer the next question a searcher would have, then say what to do next.
- Keep the URL short and readable. Our slug generator helps with that.
The keyword field shows which words Google may bold. Bold matches help a result stand out in a dense page of links.
What the preview cannot promise
Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it decides other text on the page better matches a query. Your snippet can still change after you publish, and results pages also add elements such as sitelinks, dates, ratings and images. Treat this preview as a strong draft check, not a guarantee. If key pages keep getting rewritten, an SEO audit can show where the page content and the snippet are pulling in different directions.
Questions, answered
Why does Google show a different title than the one I wrote?
Google sometimes replaces a title tag with a heading or other page text when it thinks that text better describes the page for a given search. This happens more often with titles that are very long, stuffed with keywords, or that do not match the visible content. Clear, accurate titles get rewritten less often.
Is the pixel width in the preview exact?
It is a close estimate. The tool measures text in Arial at the sizes Google uses, but browsers render fonts slightly differently, and Google adjusts its layout from time to time. Aim to keep important words well inside the limit rather than right at the edge, so small differences never cut them off.
Should I write separate snippets for mobile and desktop?
No. A page has one title tag and one meta description, and Google uses them on every device. Use the toggle to check that the most important words appear early enough to survive on both layouts. If a title only works on desktop, shorten it or move the key phrase forward.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor. It still matters because it shapes what searchers read before choosing a result. A specific, helpful description can win more clicks from the same ranking position, which makes the work you put into the rest of the page pay off.
