Breadcrumb schema generator

Schema

Describe where a page sits in your site with BreadcrumbList JSON-LD, built level by level from Home down. Free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Enter a name and URL for each level, starting with Home at the top.
  2. Click "Add a level" to go deeper, or the × button to remove one.
  3. Click "Copy code" and paste the script into the page at the last level.

What breadcrumb markup is for

A breadcrumb trail shows the path from your homepage to the current page, such as Home > Services > Dental implants. Many sites already show this as a row of links near the top of the page. BreadcrumbList markup describes that same trail in a structured way so search engines understand how your pages relate to one another.

Google can use breadcrumb data to display a cleaner path in a search result in place of a raw URL. Even when it does not, the markup reinforces your site structure, which helps search engines group related pages and understand which sections they belong to.

How the tool builds the list

Each level you add becomes a ListItem with a position, a name and, if you supply one, an item URL. Positions are numbered automatically from 1 in the order the levels appear, so the first row should always be your homepage and the last row should be the page you are marking up.

Rows without a name are skipped. The URL is optional for the last level because it is the current page. Every level above it should have a full URL, including https.

Tips for a useful trail

  • Mirror your real navigation. The markup should match the breadcrumb links visitors can see, or at least reflect a logical path a person could actually click through.
  • Use short, clear names. "Dental implants" works better than a full page title with your brand name attached.
  • Use the canonical URL for each level. Avoid URLs with tracking parameters or session IDs.
  • Show the most typical path. If a page lives in two categories, you can pick the main one. The schema also allows several trails on one page, but one clear path is usually enough.
  • Keep it in sync. If you rename or move a section, update the breadcrumb markup across the pages beneath it.

Adding it to your site

Paste the script into the page it describes. On larger sites this is normally done in a template, so every page generates its own trail from the site structure; many CMS themes and SEO plugins can do it for you. Use this tool for one-off pages, for testing what correct output looks like, or for handing an example to a developer.

Breadcrumbs pair naturally with article markup on blog posts. Once the code is live, check it with our JSON-LD validator.

Questions, answered

Do I need visible breadcrumbs on the page too?

It is strongly recommended. Visible breadcrumb links help visitors move up a level, and markup that matches what people can see is the most trustworthy kind. If your design has no visible trail, the markup should still reflect a real, logical path through your site's sections.

Should the last breadcrumb have a URL?

It can, but it does not need one, because the last item is the page the visitor is already on. Google's guidance allows omitting it for the final position. Every level above the last one should include a full, absolute URL.

Should Home be the first level?

In most cases, yes. Starting from the homepage gives a complete path that machines and people can follow. Some sites start from a top-level section instead, which is also valid, but be consistent across the site so every trail follows the same logic.

Can one page have more than one breadcrumb trail?

Yes. If a page genuinely belongs to two sections, schema allows more than one BreadcrumbList on the page. This tool builds one trail at a time, so generate each separately. For most small sites, a single trail that follows the main navigation is simpler and clearer.
