What NAP consistency means

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. It is the core of every business listing, from your Google Business Profile to Yelp, Facebook, industry directories and local chamber sites. When those details agree everywhere, search engines can be confident they all describe the same business. When they disagree, that confidence weakens, and customers may call an old number or drive to an old address.

Consistency is not a magic ranking factor on its own, but conflicting data is a common, fixable problem in local SEO, and it is worth cleaning up.

How the comparison works

Enter your correct details once at the top. These are your reference, so use the version that matches your Google Business Profile and signage. Then paste each listing you want to check, one per line, separated by vertical bars.

The tool normalizes each field before comparing:

  • Name. Case, punctuation and spacing are ignored, and "&" is treated as "and". A different word, such as "Dentistry" in place of "Dental", is a mismatch.
  • Address. Common abbreviations are treated as equal, so Avenue and Ave, Suite and Ste, or # and Ste count as the same. A missing suite number or a different street number is a mismatch.
  • Phone. Only the digits count, so (512) 555-0142 and 512.555.0142 match. A leading US country code of 1 is ignored.

The result is a table with a match or mismatch for every field of every listing, plus a count of issues to fix.

Fixing what you find

Start with the listings that matter most to your customers and your industry. For most businesses that means Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Facebook and Yelp, then the main directories for your field. Log in where you can claim the listing and edit it directly. Where you cannot, use the platform's suggest-an-edit feature.

Pay special attention to old phone numbers and previous addresses after a move. Those tend to linger on sites you have forgotten about. Search for your old number or old street address to find them.

Match your website too. Your footer, contact page and local business schema should use the same details as everywhere else.

Making it a habit

Re-run this check whenever you change phone systems, move, rebrand or add a suite number, and periodically otherwise, since directories sometimes pull outdated data from other sources. If you would rather hand citation cleanup to someone else, our local SEO service includes it.

Questions, answered

Does NAP consistency still matter for local rankings?

It matters less than your Google Business Profile, reviews and relevance, but it still matters. Consistent details help search engines connect your listings to one business, and they stop customers from finding wrong phone numbers or addresses. Cleaning up conflicts is low effort and removes an avoidable source of confusion.

Is Ave vs Avenue a problem?

No. Abbreviation differences like Ave and Avenue or Ste and Suite are ordinary formatting, and this tool ignores them. What matters is that the underlying information agrees: the same street number, suite, city, postal code and phone number. Focus on real differences, not punctuation.

What should I use as my correct NAP?

Use the details on your Google Business Profile, as long as they are accurate and match your signage and website. That listing tends to be the most visible, so it is the natural reference. Once you decide, use exactly that version everywhere you control.

Should I use a tracking phone number on listings?

Use your main local number as the primary phone on listings. If you need call tracking, Google Business Profile lets you add a tracking number as primary with your main number as an additional phone. Avoid scattering different tracking numbers across directories, since that creates exactly the inconsistency you want to avoid.
