How to use it

  1. Pick your business type and fill in name, website, phone and address.
  2. Tick the days you open, set hours, and add profile links one per line.
  3. Click "Copy code" and paste the script on your homepage or location page.

Why local businesses add this markup

LocalBusiness structured data gives search engines a tidy, machine-readable summary of who you are, where you are and when you are open. Google reads your website alongside your Google Business Profile and other listings, and clear markup removes guesswork about details like your exact address or phone number.

It will not replace a well-maintained Google Business Profile, and it is not a ranking shortcut. Think of it as one more consistent signal that confirms the facts you publish everywhere else.

Choosing the right business type

Schema.org has dozens of subtypes of LocalBusiness. Pick the most specific one that fits. A dental office should use Dentist, a plumber Plumber, a law office LegalService or Attorney. If nothing in the list matches, plain LocalBusiness is fine. A more precise type tells machines what you do without them inferring it from your page text.

Filling in the fields well

  • Name. Use your real business name exactly as it appears on signage and your Google Business Profile. Do not add keywords or city names that are not part of the name.
  • Address and phone. Match your other listings character for character where you can. Use the country code in the international phone format, such as +1 for the US.
  • Latitude and longitude. Optional, but useful if your address is hard to geocode. You can copy coordinates from a map pin.
  • Hours. Use 24-hour times like 08:00 and 17:00. Days with identical hours are grouped automatically into a single OpeningHoursSpecification entry.
  • Profile links. Add your Facebook page, Yelp listing, LinkedIn and similar profiles. These become sameAs links that tie your identity together across the web.
  • Price range. A short indicator such as $$ is enough.

When you add a website URL, the tool also sets an @id for the business. That gives other markup on your site a stable way to refer to the same entity.

Where the code goes

For a single-location business, place the script on your homepage or contact page. For several locations, give each location its own page and its own block with that location's address, phone and hours. Do not put every branch on one page under one entity.

Before publishing, compare the details against your listings with our NAP consistency checker, then test the live page. If you would like help with the wider picture, from your profile to citations and reviews, see our local SEO service.

Questions, answered

Does LocalBusiness schema help me rank in the map pack?

Not directly. Map results lean heavily on your Google Business Profile, proximity, relevance and reviews. The markup helps by stating your business details clearly and consistently on your own site, which supports the information Google already has. Treat it as good hygiene, not a ranking lever.

Which business type should I choose?

Choose the most specific type that honestly describes the business, such as Dentist, Plumber or Restaurant. If none of the options fits, use LocalBusiness. Avoid picking a type just because it sounds more popular; accuracy is what makes the markup useful.

I have several locations. Do I need one block per location?

Yes. Each location should have its own page with its own LocalBusiness block containing that branch's address, phone and hours. Putting several addresses inside one block confuses which details belong to which place. Your homepage can carry Organization markup for the brand as a whole.

What if I serve customers at their address and hide mine?

Service-area businesses that do not show their street address publicly should be consistent with that on their site. You can leave the street line blank and keep city, region and postal code, matching what your Google Business Profile shows. Never publish an address you have hidden elsewhere.
